This song is from the perspective of a punk rocker that left New York City and followed a girl south for a summer of fun. It’s not certain what happened to the girl (use your imagination to draw your own conclusion) but, he’s now a middle-aged beach bum longing for the days of his youth, as he explains to a friend in a letter.
Way down here across the Moon River
There’s an old house we use to rent by the week
We rocked it off its stilts, do you remember?
They could hear us singin’ all the way into town
Now the radios are broken, and if you think I’m jokin’
Take a ride down the strip, it’s a drag
Like everything else, the kids up and left
And I don’t know if they’re ever comin’ back
With the beach music
Beach music
Yesterday, I saw Mr. and Mrs. Brown
They’ve been comin’ here now thirty seven years
And they stumbled in the surf ‘til the waves knocked them down
Man, their laughter would bring you to tears
‘Cause my speakers are busted, and the turntable’s rusted
Down on the boardwalk, it’s a different game
They all stare at their phones, and you can’t hear the songs
You wonder if it’ll ever be the same
Without the beach music
Beach music
I had some friends in the city, we hated anything pretty
But I never wanted to be a punk
So I followed her south, and the only thing I miss now
Is watchin’ her dance in the sun
To the beach music
